Doing the Slide
Consider yourselves lucky that I have taken this brief moment to post. I am hardly taking time to eat and pee (I would consider diapers but that would involve going to the store which would consume precious time). I am in Scan-land. After a trip to my favorite pro-photo lab in Amsterdam I now have 11 rolls of slides to scan. The only sound is the low whir of my Nikon Coolscan V scanner and the click of my mouse in Photoshop.
People have asked why I spend all this time scanning... why don't I just switch to digital? I am not against digital and I imagine that someday I will switch. I love my point and shoot digital. The pro-digital gear is getting better every day and is becoming more affordable. Right now though, financially, it's not in the cards to make the switch.
On top of that, there is something magical about slide film... the anxiety of waiting for the film to come back... then it's like a gift when you see your shots for the first time. They are something tangible that you can hold in your hands (watching out for fingerprints mind you). And there is nothing that matches the colour of Fuji slides.
Yeah, someday I'll make the switch... but right now, don't bother me... I'm scanning.

I like the tangible too, so I find myself lugging both cameras around!
Wow! I never thought of it that way, but you are quite right - the anticipation of the return of the pictures is quite like opening a gift!!!
Thanks for the new way to look at it!
I know I'm not a great photographer... but frankly even I can see the difference between regular film and the slide film. I'm sure that the digital stuff is getting better all the time, but I think the colours in the slides are phenomenal. Further, having the slides as a physical "backup" are a worthwhile investment for a professional photographer. Everyone shooting digital does keep multiple backups, right? :)
